Archaeologists discovered a unique grave of a woman and a child near the Rousse region village of Nisovo, Darik Radio reported.

Roumen Ovcharov and his team found the two bodies buried in a manner similar to a popular icon of Mary and Jesus Christ.

Scientists called the discovery the Nisovo Madonna. No similar burial has been discovered in Bulgaria so far. The bodies were discovered in a necropolis dating back to the end of the 16th ti the end of the 18th centuries. Archaeologists said that the period has been poorly researched.

Nearly 500 to 1000 people lived in the region of Nisovo during that period, Archaeologists said. A big number died during a plague.

Several other unusual graves were discovered. Archaeologists found razors and said that these were used in rituals against vampires.

Many of the artifacts discovered in the region will be exhibited in the National Museum of History in the beginning of December 2008.
