Bulgarian archeologist discovered the relics St. John the Baptist during excavations at St. Ivan island near Bulgaria’s town of Sozopol.
On July 28, the team uncovered a reliquary and they supposed that the artifacts preserved inside may include the important relics. A small box was discovered inside.
The reliquary was opened on August 1 in Sozopol's history museum, under extraordinary security measures. The reliquary contained six finger bones, part of a heel, a jaw and a few small bones, Standard Daily reported.
The team of archeologists under the leadership of Kazimir Popkonstantinov and an archeologist Tsonia Drazheva found the remains.
Archeologist started excavations of a monastery situated on St. Ivan Island on July 20. St. Ivan island is one of the five islands in the Bulgarian Black Sea region.
