Seven European countries introduce unified hotel categorization standards
from 04.01.2010 10:32       Author - Tourist Media
The Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Sweden and Switzerland will introduce unified hotel categorization standards, Dnevnik daily reported.

This decision was taken after a summit of hospitality associations from the seven countries. It took place in Prague, shortly before Christmas.

The initiative’s main aim is the introduction of unified standards guaranteeing tourists the same quality of service in each country.

To receive a star, a hotel has to meet various criteria. A five-star hotel should have 24-hour reception, parking lot, room service, laundry and ironing services, internet, safe in the room, greeting cards, flowers, a fruit basket and all necessary cosmetic products.
Austria, Germany, Sweden and Czech Republic will introduce the new assessment system in January 2010. The Netherlands and Switzerland will follow in 2011.

Major touroperators launched the initiative in order to deal with tourist complaints concerning discrepancies in hotel services.

Some international tourism associations disapprove of the initiative. According to the International Hotel & Restaurant Association, national categorization systems are good enough and the expectations of tourists vary according to the selected destination.
