Radio Focus-Pazardzhik interviewed head of the Septemvri archaeology museum Valentina Taneva.
Q. Can you tell us more about the condition of some of the famous archaeological sites that you are researching and most of all, can you tell us about the ancient Emporion Pistiros?
A. Emporion Pistiros is one unique archaeological site located in the vicinities of Septemvri. It acted as a trade center 2600 years ago and functioned for nearly three centuries. Thracians lived and worked there. Research of the site has been ongoing for 20 years. The museum’s collection was vastly enriched. As a result of the archaeological research in the region, we discovered numerous architectural remains, some of which in good condition. The ancient Emporion Pistiros is extremely attractive site and could aid the development of tourism in the region. Over the past 20 years, we have been trying to deal with the numerous plants, in order to enforce the remains and to protect them from destruction.
Q. Are you worried about the condition of Emporion Pistiros?
A. The team is seriously troubled. We are worried about the current condition of the site. If no measures are undertaken to remove all the plants growing there, some of the walls and archaeological structures might be damaged. Emporion Pistiros is unique and is a site of international importance. This site is a national treasure and one of our duties is to research and protect it.
Q. Should research continue?
A. Yes, we will continue working in two main directions. We will finish researching the sewerage system of Emporion Pistiros. In addition, we will examine a ceramics oven that has been partially uncovered. It is unusual and the discovered remains are sufficient to reconstruct the entire facility. It serves as an evidence that crafts were practiced there. We discovered various dishes, some of which complete.
