A limestone head sculpture depicting a man was found during excavations in Nicopolis ad Istrum near Bulgaria’s Veliko Turnovo, Darik Radio reported.
The head has almost natural size. Half of the face, together with the curls of hair have been preserved in good condition. Archeologists believe that the head is part of ancient herm.
Herms are square or rectangular columns made of wood, stone or bronze. The name comes from Greek and means rock, stone or stand. A head sculpture was usually positioned on top of it.
According to archeologist Pavlina Vladikova, the ancient herm is a rare finding for Bulgaria.
