Rome’s mayor has announced fine of Euro 150 for throwing cigarette butts on the streets. A research has shown that every year around 4 billion cigarette butts are thrown in Italy’s capital, half of them on the street.

The measure is part of draft legislation, stating that for safety reasons and in compliance with the standards of decency throwing cigarette butts and any tobacco waste at public places is strictly forbidden.

Besides fighting tobacco waste Rome’s administration plans a number of other measures to help clean up the city ahead of the upcoming Jubilee Year, proclaimed by Pope Francis. The year starts on 8th December and ends on 20th November 2016. The measures include tightening up regulations on aggressive begging, sleeping rough in public places, sitting on monuments and washing car windows at traffic lights.
