Newly discovered mediaeval inscriptions in Perperikon prove that in the past, the archeological site was an important financial and economic center in the Eastern Rhodope region, archeologist Nicolai Ovcharov told Bulgarian News Agency.
Inscriptions date back to for the 4th to 5th centuries and provide information of Asia Minor and Syrian settlers in this area of Thrace.
Findings were made after exploration of the discovered in the beginning of August Roman road and blacksmith’s workshop.
Archeologists found a lead seal from the end of the 11th century. The seal depicts the name of a Byzantium dignitary.
