The new border checkpoint Smolyan-Arda-Paranesti-Drama may starts functioning by the end of October 2010, Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Ivo Marinov said as quoted by Radio Focus-Smolyan.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borisov and his Greek counterpart George Papandreou will be responsible for reaching an agreement over the terms for the opening of the new checkpoint.

According to Drama Governor Konstantinos Evmiridis, the Greek part of the road leading to the new checkpoint could be functional within one summer season of work.

Evmiridis said that he endorses the idea for the construction of an St. George at the checkpoint. Half of the chapel will be constructed over Bulgarian territory and the other half – over Greek.

The border checkpoint will facilitate access to Bulgaria’s winter resort of Pampororovo and to the Aegean Sea beaches, Marinov said.
