What equipment is suitable for mountain tourism during the summer? What accidents happen in the mountain and how should one act? Focus news agency interviewed representative of the Mountain Rescue Service Milcho Hristov.

Q. What dangers does the mountain hold for tourists during the summer?
A. During the summer, especially in its first months, higher altitudes steep slopes and northern parts still hold snow. Slipping on this snow could lead to serious trauma. This snow is quite dense and lasts a long time. Tourists should never cross snowy areas. Special shoes are needed to pass through these snowed regions. Also, before going for a mountain walk, tourists should evaluate the weather conditions. They might get lost if the weather is rainy and foggy.

Q. Can tourists use any devices in such situations?
A. Yes, GPS devices do excellent job in such cases. Maps can be used, as well.

Q. Are there any dangerous animals and insects in the mountain regions?
A. No such animals inhabit the Bulgarian mountains. All kinds of bites are easy to heal. If a tourists has a snake bite, he or she should be taken to a hospital within two to three hours.

Q.
Are there any hours during which tourists should avoid mountain walks?
A. Usually, when covering a large distance, tourists should start the walk early in the morning. Rain might fall in the afternoon, if the weather in the morning is fair. It is best for groups to include four to five people. People in the group should know each other, as well as the physical condition of each group member. During the summer, people could suffer from burns. Tourists should have sunglasses, even if the weather is not very sunny.

Q. Do you have cases of tourists hit by lightning?
A. Yes, it happens.

Q. Is it safe for tourists to stay inside shelters?
A. It is best for them to check the weather forecast and if thunderstorms are expected – to refrain from taking a trip.

Q. What should be done if a tourist is hit by lightning?
A. Other group members should check if the person is breathing and has a pulse. CPR might be needed, while waiting for rescue teams.

Q. Do incidents happen more often during the summer or during the winter?
A. Usually, we register more traumas during the winter but this is because of the activities of skiers. Incidents happen every day in winter resorts. Extreme skiers and snowboarders often go outside the tracks. During the summer, people go to the mountain more but should be aware that some equipment is needed, just like during the winter.

Q. What will you advise people who like extreme sports like rock climbing and rafting?
A. Risks exist when such sports are practiced. They should be prepared and well equipped. Mobile phones are a must and the battery should be saved. People should be aware of paths and their exact location. Tourists should be aware that incidents do happen and should be prepared.

Q. What incidents happen during the summer?
A. Tourists often get lost.

Q. During the winter, you use rescue dogs? Are they participants in rescue missions during the summer?
A. The dogs are mostly used to find people when avalanches fall. These dogs cannot be used to find tourists who are lost, for example. They can be used in cases of earthquakes but are not suitable for finding people lost in the mountain.
