Ministry of Transport and Communications in Macedonia prohibits the usage of tourism vessels in Ohrid Lake. The ban will be enforced until all vessels undergo and pass a technical inspection, Outrinski Vesnik reported, as quoted by Focus News Agency.
According to the ministry order, all vessels must undergo new registration with the French company Bureau Veritas after Macedonia suspended the contract with Lloyd company.
Lloyd’s representative in the country is indicted in Macedonia. The case involves a vessel that sunk in September 2009, leading to the death of 15 Bulgarian tourists.
The owners of tourism vessels protested against the new decision, because Bureau Veritas offered very high inspection prices. According to owners, they have to pay 7500 euro for the inspection. A Bulgarian company, which applied for the same position, offered an inspection price of 1500 euro.
The ban will be valid until all vessels are registered, Makfaks News Agency reported. According to ship owners, the new procedure will take a long time and they will probably be unable to work during the active tourism season.
