The central Razlog square hosted on January 17 the third international koukeri festival Starchevata 2009.

Nearly 1200 participants from 22 folk groups took part in the competition. They filled the town square with the sound of bells. Dressed in fur and wearing masks, the groups presented folk rituals that were believed to bring fertility and to chase evil spirits away.

A six-member jury evaluated the performances.

The groups from Soushitsa and Brezhani villages were ranked first. The Brezhani folk group presented wedding rituals.

Razlog mayor Liuben Tatarski presented a separate award. It was handed to the group from Touria village because of the beautiful costumes.

Cherniche village koukeri presented vine pruning rituals. The jury presented the group with an award for the best presented tradition. An award for best mask and costumes was given to the participants from Kalougerovo, Polena and Radibosh villages.
