Irina Bokova became the first woman selected to be the director-general of UNESCO. The decision was taken on September 22 after tense voting procedure, Bulgarian National Television reported.
Bokova is the first woman to head UNESCO and also the first representative from Eastern Europe in the managerial team of the organization.
Egyptian culture minister Farouk Hosny was Bokova’s main opponent.. European Commissioners Benita Ferrero-Waldner and Ecuador’s representatives Ivonne Baki decided to withdraw from the selection process.
Bokova and Hosny received 29 votes each on first voting..
Hosny’s nomination came to wide discussion because of his anti-Semitic sentiments stated one year ago.
Bokova has had a long career as a diplomat and politician. She was born in Sofia in 1952. Her studies took place at Moscow State Institute of International Relations and at the School of Public Affairs at the University of Maryland in US. Bokova has experience in the United Nations, European Union and NATO.
