Europe registered the smallest increase of 0.3 percent compared to other regions in the world. Northern Europe, which was seriously affected by the closure of European airspace because of the volcanic eruption in Iceland, is far from recovery.
The Middle East registered a 33 percent increase, Asia and the Pacific saw a 12 percent increase. The increase in Africa was seven percent and in the Americas – six percent.
Air transportation marked a six percent growth according to International Air Transport Association (IATA) data.
From January to April 2010, international tourism travels reached 258 million. During the worst period of the financial crisis in 2009, tourism arrivals totaled 242 million.
The Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, World Football Cup in South Africa and other similar events have affected tourism positively.
Tourism suffered the results of some natural disasters – earthquakes in Haiti, Chili, Southern California and Guatemala and the floods in some parts of Europe and Machu Picchu.
UNWTO maintains its January forecasts that international tourism arrivals in 2010 will increase about there to four percent.
