Hotels in the Bulgarian capital of Sofia have registered a 17.1 percent decrease in bookings in 2009, Dnevnik daily reported.
Hotels and accommodation spots in Sofia registered over one million bookings. This result is the poorest since 2006 when the annual bookings varied between 1.2 and 1.3 million.
Family hotels and private apartments for rent registered an increase in accommodation of respectively 34 and 38.6 percent.
The financial crisis affected European bisoness travel, which in turn decreased the number of hotel bookings in Sofia, head of the capital’s tourism council Vitan Ivanov said.
Despite the crisis, Sofia’s hospitality business is investing in new sites. In 2009, Sofia had a total of 293 accommodation spots, 9.5 percent more than the 2008 number.
