Bulgaria’s tourism sector is losing 500 000 euro each day because of the protesting Greek farmers that have blocked border checkpoints between Bulgaria and Greece, Economy, Energy and Tourism Minister Traicho Traikov said.

Traikov met Greek ambassador in Bulgaria Danai-Magdalini Koumanakou to discuss the situation.

According to the Economy, Energy and Tourism Ministry, Bulgarian businesses are losing three million euro on a daily basis. Of the total, 2.5 million euro result from failed exports, 500 000 euro resulted from cancelled tourism bookings. Bulgarian cargo companies are losing 150 000 euro each day.

The number of tourists coming from Greece to Bulgaria decreased 10 times since the start of the protests.

Protests are not meant to target businesses and neighboring countries like Bulgaria, ambassador Koumanakou said.
