An interesting grave from the late antiquity was discovered during excavation works behind Kyustendil's art gallery, Darik Radio reported.
The finding dates back to the early Middle Ages or the late antiquity. Archaeologists found human remains, probably male. The person was not wealthy, since no artifacts were discovered. The gender will be determined with certainty through further testing.
The grave faces the east-west direction, something typical for Christian traditions. Yet, archaeologists discovered signs of pagan rituals. Some bones in the upper part of the body have been substituted with stones.
Archaeologists said that the grave was situated outside fortress walls. People in the late antiquity used to bury their dead outside the settlement.
