Eco tourism is one of the fastest growing sectors in the sphere of tourism on a global scale, head of the State Agency for Tourism (SAT) Anelia Kroushkova said.
Kroushkova took part in a press conference about the progress in implementing a program for the development of rural tourism in Bulgaria, Focus news agency reported.
Expenditure on eco tourism grows annually by approximately 20 percent. Walks in nature increase on the average between 10 and 30 percent each year.
Bulgaria is still mostly known as a destination for ski and coastal tourism. Nearly 44 percent of all annual accommodations are registered in July and August. To change the situation, the country needs to promote more actively ecological tourism opportunities.
Kroushkova also discussed the problems stemming from the international financial crisis. The most positive predictions for 2009 give the tourism sector a zero percent growth.
