Bulgarian travelers help the development of rural tourism
from 18.08.2009 09:01       Author - Tourist Media
Bulgarian rural tourism saw an increase of 20 percent in booking demand, Monitor daily reported quoting chairperson of the Association of Bulgarian Villages Borislav Borisov.

Tourists spend an average of five days in rural areas. Most of them choose the regions near historical monuments, monasteries and natural landmarks.

Mostly Bulgarian tourists visit the rural areas. Only five percent of the foreign tourists visiting Bulgaria spend their vacation in rural areas. The ones who come to the villages are usually part of organized groups.

Over 2000 guest houses in Bulgarian villages welcomed tourists.  Poor road infrastructure is the main problem standing in the way of rural tourism development. Some owners of village houses invest individually in road renovations.

Over the past two years, rural houses have refrained from increasing accommodation prices. Yet, income increased as a result of the high tourist interest.

Villages near the seaside are the only ones experienced lack of tourist interest.
