In 2009, 1534 Bulgarians aged over 55 visited Spain making use of a special tourism program, Secretary for Tourism in Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade on Spain Joan Mesquida Ferrando said as quoted by Pari daily.
Bookings for vacations during season 2010-2011 already exceed twice bigger than those for the same period of the past year.
Ferrando and Bulgarian Minister of Economy, Energy and Tourism Traicho Traikov signed a memorandum on tourism cooperation.
The Spanish senior citizens tourism program targeted 16 EU member countries. Bulgarian interest in the program ranked the country seventh among them all. Bulgarian tourists visited Andalusia and Balearic islands. The seven-day package was worth 365 euro.
UK and German tourists showed highest interest in the program.
Spain invested 24 million euro in the program. Half of the money was provided from the state budget and the regions provided the rest of the needed funding.
