Bulgaria seeking wealthy tourists, still lacking tourism products
from 23.08.2010 15:02       Author - Tourist Media
For years, Bulgaria has been one of the preferred tourism destinations for those seeking an inexpensive vacation, Wall Street Journal reported. Bulgarian resorts are still unable to make it up the chart concerning quality of service.

Bulgaria’s tourism sector contributes to 8.7 percent of the country’s GDP. Yet, representatives of the sphere complain of the large dependence on mega resorts and All Inclusive packages. Simultaneously, Bulgaria registers setbacks in service, the qualification of staff and the quality of infrastructure.

Over the past 10 years, Bulgarian officials discussed the creation of diverse tourism products including hunting, golf, nature and cultural attractions. Despite these attempts, mass tourism opportunities remain stable and popular due to the lack of organization, poor management and weak marketing attempts.

According to visitors, Bulgaria is still unable to utilize fully its natural riches.

Bulgaria welcomed 2.1 million tourists during the first half of 2010. Unfortunately, nine out of 10 tourists visit solely summer resorts. The Bulgarian government is trying to change this tendency.

In the past weeks, Prime Minister Boiko Borisov asked from his ministers the creation of a cultural tourism development strategy.

Even the lack of qualified staff can be overcome. The new generation is expected to join the country’s workforce soon. These people have the potential to change the situation.
