Bourgas Lake becomes protected area
from 01.12.2008 10:19       Author - Tourist Media
An order of Environment and Water Affairs Minister Dzhevdet Chakurov has turned the Bourgas Lake into a protected area, actualno.com reported.

This status puts the lake under the protection of Bulgaria’s biological development law.

Part of the preservation project includes the renovation and protection of rare species habitats. A number of very rare birds nest near the lake.

Bourgas lake is the biggest lake in the country. Via Pontica, the second biggest bird migration route in Europe, passes over its territory. A total of 254 bird species nest there, nine of which endangered on a global scale.

The construction of a factory near Bourgas caused pollution. The lake water was purified several years ago.
