The municipality authorities of Berlin will introduce tax for hotels from January 1 2013, Reuters reported. After the tax hotel stays will rise five percent.
Berlin is the third most visited European capital after London and Paris. In 2010 hotel owners registered 20 million stays.
The new hotel tax will bring 20 million euro income per year in the Berlin’s municipality budget. Part of the money will be reinvested for tourism development, the mayor of the town Klaus Wowereit said.
German hotel and restaurant association Dehoga says that the tax is unfair, because other industries like taxi drivers or museums stay unaffected.
