The oldest town in Europe has been discovered near the Pazardzhik region village of Iunatsite, archaeologist Iavor Boiadzhiev told Novinar daily.
A team has been exploring a mound there for several years but only now did the scientists discover evidence that a settlement existed there. The town was major and fortified.
Archaeologists discovered remain of fortress walls. The height reached at certain places as much as five m.
The town expanded beyond the area of the mound. According to evidence, over 1000 people lived there.
According to historians, the ancient settlement appeared 7000 years ago and was destroyed during several assaults.
