Neviastata rock phenomenon, considered by Smolyan residents as a symbol of the town, houses an ancient Thracian sanctuary, radio Focus reported quoting archaeologist Nikola Damianov.
Scientists believe that the entire rock phenomenon can be considered a sanctuary, since cult pits have been made in all of its parts.
The highest part of the rock was used to start fire and to perform fortune-telling rituals, Damianov said.
Artifacts like ceramic pieces from the late Bronze Age were discovered in the foot of the rock. Damianov believes that the sanctuary was used during the 15th and 16th centuries BC. Further research will be needed to find out the exact time period.
Byzantine fortress Aetos, dating back to the 5th and 6th centuries AD is also situated near the rock phenomenon.
