Owners of collections have initiated changes to Bulgaria’s cultural heritage law, deputy manager of the national institute of archaeology towards the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences Liudmil Vagalinski.
Archeologists in Bulgaria are deeply worried about these legal changes. According to amendments tabled for National Assembly approval, regulations concerning private collections of antiquities will be loosened.
In the end of July, Bulgaria’s ombudsman Ginio Ganev appealed in Constitutional Court the amendments made to the law in February 2009. Ganev said that it was unconstitutional for deals involving cultural landmarks to undergo necessary registration.
Archaeologists believe that changes introduced to the law one by one serve a common purpose. They attacked the suggestion of the ombudsman.
According to official data, over 300 000 treasure hunters operate in Bulgaria. Archaeologists said that the activities of treasure hunters ruin their attempts to recover historical information.
