Representatives of spa resorts met in Romania's Brasov to discuss development of the sector, bursa.ro reported. According to the publication, local resorts are facing serious competition from spa destinations in Bulgaria and Hungary.
Hungarian resorts organized spa clusters that give tourists numerous procedure options. Bulgarian resorts show higher quality and class than Romanian. Romania's main advantages are the quality of its springs and the qualification of medical staff.
Yet, local spa hotels fail making use of this potential. Poor infrastructure, lack of cooperation between investors and local authorities and weak marketing efforts hinder the development of the spa industry in Bulgaria's northern neighbor.
Though conditions in Bulgaria and Hungary are better, prices there are lower. The high prices and "communist ambience" predetermine customers of Romanian hotels as almost entirely local. More than half of these visitors are pensioners who make use of social subsidies.
