Several pieces of stone columns were stolen from the ancient settlement of Nicopolis ad Istrum situated near the Veliko Turnovo village of Nikiup, radio Focus-Veliko Turnovo reported quoting police sources of information.
Treasure hunters stole the stone foundations of the columns. These date back to 102 AD or the reign of emperor Trajan. Pavlina Vladkova, the archaeologist responsible for the site, said that the stolen artifacts do not have great monetary value and cannot be taken abroad. She said that the artifacts were probably stolen to decorate someone's yard.
Apart from the stolen artifacts, treasure hunters managed to dig three big ditches and have damaged some of the layers that were to be researched in the future.
Only three guards protect Nicopolis ad Istrum during the day. Veliko Turnovo regional history museum is responsible for its management.
